It’s almost heaven in West Virginia as you ride the rails and country roads through the Allegheny Mountains. It’s an Appalachian Adventure with vintage trains, secret bunkers, old world coal mines, giant telescopes and more!

Day 1 – Almost Heaven, West Virginia (D)
Journey through the Pocono and Alleghany Mountains, arriving in West Virginia for a three course welcome dinner at 1863 Grill. Get a good night’s rest at the Issac Jackson Hotel in Elkins, your home for the first two nights of the trip.

Day 2 – Rockets and Stars (B, D)
All Aboard the Durbin Rocket, one of the most rare and famous vintage trains! The Rocket is powered by Old #3, a vintage steam locomotive and one of only three of its kind in the world. Chug along the scenic Greenbrier River. See coal being shoveled into the tender, be amazed at the views from the open car and the closed-car comfort of the 1920’s style coaches and cabooses.

Shoot for the stars this afternoon with a guided tour at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, home of the world’s largest moving telescope, standing close to 1,000 feet tall.
This evening, enjoy a pre-show dinner at Vintage Restaurant before heading to the famous American Mountain Theater for an evening of live entertainment and the “freshest sound in the mountains!”

Day 3 – Top Secret (B)
After a hearty breakfast, drive through the beautiful Allegheny Mountains arriving at the 5-star Greenbrier Resort, home to the declassified “Bunker.” This once top secret government location was previously hidden for 30 years. Built during the Cold War Era, The Bunker was meant to house Senators and Congressmen in the event of a nuclear attack.

After an underground tour of The Bunker, explore the Greenbrier grounds, gardens, shop and restaurants with plenty of time for lunch on your own.

Tonight, check in to the Country Inn & Suites in Beckly, WV. Enjoy a good night’s rest here for two nights.

Day 4 – Under the Mountain and Through the Wood (B, D)
Under the Allegheny Mountains, travel 1500 feet into the old workings of an authentic, 1800’s coal mine. Experience mining life as you ride the mine’s rails on a tour led by a veteran miner. This afternoon, journey to the vast Canyon Rim and the soaring New River Gorge. See amazing views of the longest river gorge in the Appalachian Mountains. Tonight, visit Tamarack, a special, can’t miss highlight. Tamarack is a showcase of mountain crafts, arts, food, music and more. Enjoy dinner in one of Tamarack’s private dining rooms, with a unique cooking demonstration.

Day 5 – Country Roads, Take Me Home (B)
Start the day with your friends, recounting your trip over breakfast. Then, we’ll let the country roads take us home.
